Coaching Philosophy
Consistency
It is no secret that great training and achieving your goals come from putting in the work. Simply put, you have to put in the training to finish that goal race or achieve that PR. Consistency is often the biggest thing preventing athletes from seeing progress — having a coach on your side to keep you accountable can help you break the cycle! Consistency means not only consistent training but also consistent rest and recovery. Contrary to what you might think, though, consistency does not mean perfection. Life happens and missing a day or even a week of training is not a big deal—I promise!
Love the Journey, Trust your Process
A big goal of mine as a coach is for my athletes to enjoy the process of training. Of course, some days might just feel crappy or hard to get out the door. Those days are also part of the journey, but your overall love of the process is important to me as your coach. We’ll always work together to make sure your training plan is working with your life outside of running. You are a unique individual, so your training will not (and should not!) look exactly like someone else’s. Part of training is finding what makes you thrive!
Modern Training Theory
As a coach, it is my job to strike the right balance between the latest in training theory and the tried and true methods. Every athlete’s training will look different based on their background and goals, but most of my athletes can expect to see the following basic principles incorporated into their plans:
Easy running
The majority of your running each week should be at an easy effort — this goes a long way towards getting faster over the long term and feeling fresh for workouts and race days!
Weekly strides
20-30 second speed intervals done weekly — great for building speed without taxing the body.
Specificity
Training will always be prescribed with the demands of your specific goal race or event in mind.
Adequate rest and recovery
1 full rest day/week for most athletes. Put your feet up!
Fueling for Success
My first disclaimer: I am not a registered dietician and if fueling your training is something you struggle with, I highly recommend you work with an RD. I say that because it is very important to me that you are fueling your body with enough food, always. Around here, all foods fit and are key to your success! Fueling your body before, during, and after your runs will be a very important part of your training. Around here, we love carbs!
Longevity in Sport
Your long-term health and happiness are way more important to me than any race or short-term goal. As your coach, I’m here to help guide you toward your goals in a sustainable way and support you in all phases of your journey. This means managing the training load, fueling adequately, and addressing injuries thoroughly. Racing and achieving big goals is amazing, but being active long into our lives is way better!
